Obstacle course challenge for Cancer Research

A Fauldhouse breast cancer survivor is calling on women to sign up for Cancer Research UK’s Pretty Muddy.

Fiona Findlay (47) is encouraging ladies to get involved and help fund the charity’s life-saving research.

Having been diagnosed with the disease last year, Fiona, who is married to Lothians MSP Neil Findlay, is now on the road to recovery.

And she is joining Cancer Research UK’s drive to get ladies to sign up for one of two Pretty Muddy obstacle courses in Glasgow or Edinburgh this Saturday (September 17).

Fiona said: “I know modern day cancer treatment is only possible thanks to research and so I would urge ladies to get in on the fun and sign up for Pretty Muddy as soon as possible.”

Fiona, who works as a clinical support worker at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, revealed that her diagnosis came about after she found a lump in her right breast.

After receiving the news, Fiona immediately called Neil, who rushed home from the Scottish Parliament to be by her side.

She said: “He just crumpled. We both headed home and cried. When our daughter Chloe came home from university we told her together and just spent some time comforting one another.

“But after that, I told them that I wanted all the crying to be done and if I was going to get through this, I would need a positive attitude – and for them to support me with that.”

Fiona has thanked her family, friends and those within the community who have given her their best wishes.

She added: “Every week there would be a delivery of flowers, people lit candles for me in our local church and I was sent more than 100 cards from people wishing me well. It was phenomenal.

“And my family were so strong for me. My husband deserves a medal for looking after me so well and my daughter Chloe took it all in her stride.”

Susan Johnstone, Cancer Research UK’s national events manager in Scotland said: “We are so grateful to Fiona and her amazing family for supporting Pretty Muddy. Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Taking part is about being part of a collective force of powerful women - of all ages - leading the charge against cancer.”

The events will take place at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow and at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston. For more information and to enter, visit www.raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.
