A weird mixed bag this one as comedy capers butt heads with hostage-taking and soldiers losing limbs.

Tina Fey does fine work as wartime journalist Kim Baker, as does Margot Robbie as her conniving competitor.

But Alfred Molina and Martin Freeman feel like caricatures – the latter sporting a dodgy Scottish accent.

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 1 (18) ●●●● ●

Bruce Campbell has a whale of a time reprising his most iconic role on the small screen.

The blood, gore, laughs and scares prevalent in the Evil Dead movie sequels are all present and correct.

One-time Xena Lucy Lawless makes for a fiercely formidable foe and there’s a killer set-up for season two.

Green Room (18) ●●●● ●

Green Room is a fresh and original piece of work; where else would you see Patrick Stewart growling and snapping away playing a neo-Nazi?

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier refuses to pigeon-hole his flick into one specific genre and there’s no dip in quality in his sophomore movie.

Stewart gives his finest performance in years and his younger co-stars – including the late Anton Yelchin – provide a striking mix of fear, determination to survive and bravery.

The graphic violence won’t be for everyone, but it’s befitting the incredibly tight, tense situation everyone finds themselves in.

No-one behaves in a manner you wouldn’t expect them to and there’s no verbal or physical grandstanding.
