Network’s going from strength to strength something for all at Craigshill’s groups

- Debbie Hall

Everybody needs good neighbours.

And one popular group is proving just that by offering a wide range of activities, clubs and classes to suit almost everyone in their community.

Craigshill Good Neighbour Network was created 32 years ago to help people who had moved from Glasgow to settle into their new homes and it has gone from strength to strength since.

The charity now runs a series of clubs every week - which includes a knitting group, lunch club, dance class and much more - and now has a sewing and craft project, dubbed Don’t Throw it, Sew it, in Craigshill Mall.

The organisation run projects to help engage people living in Craigshill and help eradicate social isolation, including a Veterans Befriending project and Men’s club.

Its volunteers also support other groups - like the Youth Actions Project - and are involved in national campaigns.

Most recently the network has organised events as part of Luminate: Scotland’s Ageing Creative Ageing Festival, which runs throughout October.

Through this project older people have learned some exciting new skills - including how to DJ!

Network manager, Jane Groves, said the aim of the organisation is to help people socialise and encourage people all ages and backgrounds to volunteer.

Andf it has been so successful that it is in the process of opening new premises in the old library across the road from its base at the Almondbank Centre.

She told the Courier: “Craigshill Good Neighbour Network is a local charity which is passionate about providing practical help, social and volunteering opportunities in our community.

“We recruit and develop volunteers to support our services, co-ordinate several weekly groups and activities and organise outings throughout the year for members.

“Feedback from our members and support organisations point to the difference the network has been making to people’s lives within the community.
