Fauldhouse breast cancer survivor Fiona Findlay conquered a different Race for Life earlier this month.

Forty-seven- year- old Fiona, who is the wife of Lothians MSP Neil Findlay, joined the fight against cancer by taking part in the 5K Pretty Muddy event in Edinburgh.

She was the Royal Highland Showground event ’ s VIP starter and made an emotional speech from the stage about her experience with cancer.

After that, she sounded an airhorn to set off a pink army of more than 4600 women taking part in the challenge, including seven of her own family members under the team name Fif’s Flowertots.

It came almost a year after Fiona was diagnosed with cancer following the discovery of a lump in her right breast.

Speaking after the event, she said: “I have received so much support since my cancer diagnosis and I am so relieved to be at the end of my treatment and to be lucky enough to once again enjoy life.

“Taking part in Pretty Muddy has been another step on my road to recovery.”

Claire Wase, Cancer Research UK’s event manager for Pretty Muddy Edinburgh added: “It was amazing that Fiona and her team were able to take part in Pretty Muddy.

“Fiona’s words from the stage really brought it home to everyone why we need to keep up the fight against cancer.

“While sliding around in the mud was a lot of fun, the day was also full of emotion with participants remembering loved ones lost to cancer or celebrating the lives of people dear to them who have survived.

“Our aim is that one day everyone will beat cancer. The more research we can fund, the sooner that day will come.”
