Selkirk 0-3 Linlithgow Rose

-

Linlithgow Rose set up a Scottish Cup Second Round clash at home to League Two outfit Stirling Albion thanks to a scintillating second half performance against Selkirk.

The visitors, who have struggled in the league so far this season, started off on the front foot and they should have taken the lead on a couple of occasions only for Gary Thom and then Blair Batchelor to miss golden chances.

Darren Hill, a new signing in goal for the Rose, quickly justified the manager’s decision to drop Richie Barnard as he pulled off a string of fine saves in the first half, denying both Dale Baxter and Phil Addison when the Selkirk men appeared certain to break the deadlock.

The game quickly took a huge turn in favour of the Junior side in the early stages of the second half as Tommy Coyne was clattered by Mark Sampson inside the box.

The defender was shown a red card and the striker swiftly dusted himself down and gave his side the lead.

From that point on, it was always going to be Linlithgow sealing their spot in the second round and Coyne prodded home Graham Weir’s corner to double his side’s advantage before Kevin Kelbie completed the scoring on 76 minutes when he fired home after a defensive error.

Davie McGlynn’s Linlithgow side made history last season by becoming the first Junior outfit to progress to the last-16 of the senior Scottish Cup.

The match at Prestonfield is currently scheduled for October 22.

Second round draw: Annan Athletic v East Stirlingshire, Banks O’Dee v Fortmartine United, Brora Rangers v Clyde, BSC Glasgow v Beith, Turriff United or Bonnyrigg Rose v Cove Rangers, Berwick Rangers v Civil Service Strollers or Hawick Royal Albert, LINLITHGOW ROSE v Stirling Albion, Wick Academy v Whitehill Welfare, Preston Athletic v Montrose.
