Cross country kicks off

The 2016-17 Scottish Athletics Cross Country season got under way at Dechmont Law on Saturday with the East District Relay Championsh­ips.

Hosted by the local Lothian Running Club, the event attracted clubs from all over the east of Scotland with a record number of finishers in three of the four categories.

LRC fielded six teams in total - three in the senior men’s race, two in the senior women and one in the junior girls race.

The women’s top team were the club’s highest finishers on the day in sixth place.

The trio were led off by Sarah Inglis who not only won the first leg but also produced the fastest leg of the day by a female as she covered the 4km course in 13.51.

Sarah handed over to her sister Mhairi who recorded a time of 16.33 to finish in fifth place and pass the baton onto anchor leg runner Lana Turnbull who brought the team home in sixth in 17.00 for a combined time of 47.24.

The senior men’s race comprised of four legs with the Lothian RC quartet of Malcolm Lang, Josh Dack, Owen Williams and Andrew King finishing in 18th place while the girls team of Hannah Steel, Shannon Prevost and Robyn McDonald performed well against older opposition as they came home in 27th spot.

Junior Girls [2.5km]: 27th Hannah Steel [10.50], Erin Steel [12.23], Robyn McDonald [12.55]. Total time:36.08. Elsewhere within the club, Gerry McCafferty ran the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon in York where he finished 579th & 44th in the MV50 category in 3:34.38.

Hill runner John Malcolm completed the 26.6km Pentland Skyline Hill Race, finishing in 75th place in 3:16.18.

Numerous club members were out and about at various parkruns on Saturday morning with Mel Zobel and Jo Williams finishing second and third in the female category in the Livingston parkrun with Linda Garrity clinching second female spot at Whitley Bay.
