School has designs on art competition

Livingston visit

- Marjorie Kerr

Pupils at a Livingston school enjoyed a fun-filled day of art as a special team paid a visit.

Primary six children at St John Ogilvie Primary got involved in the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools’ creative sessions, led by the National Galleries of Scotland education team. The workshop focused on printmaking and looked at portraiture through the work of Calum Colvin, Picasso and plaster busts.

Events are designed to help more schools get involved and bring Scotland’s national collection to children across Scotland. The competition, run by the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) and supported by Tesco Bank, attracts thousands of entries every year from children across Scotland. Entrants kickstart their own ideas by looking at some of the amazing works in the National Galleries’ collection, and there are a range of categories for children from nursery age all the way through to S3. The annual exhibition of winning entries at the NGS attracts thousands of visitors from across the globe, and provides a much-deserved opportunity for some very talented young people to show their work in public.

In 2017, for the first time, the winners will see their work showcased at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in addition to receiving art materials, vouchers and workshops for their schools.

Linda McClelland, playfair coordinator at National Galleries of Scotland, said: “After exploring some of the rich treasures of art in our national collection it is exciting to watch the children produce their own work inspired by what they have seen.” Chris Newton, community manager at Tesco Bank, added: “We are very excited that the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools was able to bring the national collection to St John Ogilvie Primary School and that the workshop enabled pupils to unleash their artistic skills.”
