Burnie are pulled back

- Whitburn ................ 2 St Andrews Utd ....... 2

Whitburn began life after Tom Hendrie with a home point against St Andrews United – but it could have been all three as they let a two-goal lead slip at Central Park.

Jim Grant and Colin Martin took charge of first team affairs and things got off to a bright start as they went in for the half-time break two goals to the good.

After goalkeeper Burnie goalie Dougie Horne had made an early stop from Craig Wedderburn, it was all one-way traffic in favour of the hosts and they took the lead just before the 20-minute mark when Gary Brass got on the end of a Jack Hamilton pass and stroked the ball into the net.

Martin Russell would double his side’s lead 10 minutes later when Hamilton’s free-kick was only cleared to the edge of the box with Russell firing low into the bottom corner.

United almost cut the deficit when Michael Fleming rattled the woodwork from distance just before the interval.

If the hosts were in control of the first 45 minutes, the visitors would get much the better of the second half.

Horne tipped a Lea Schiavone penalty out for a corner but Barry Sibanda was left unmarked from the set-piece and promptly fired the ball past the keeper.

And they would ensure they travelled home with a share of the spoils when Jordan Austin’s overhead kick flew into the net with nine minutes remaining as Burnie’s winless league run went to nine games.

Whitburn are looking to continue their Scottish Junior Cup journey this weekend as they face a long trip north to struggling East Region North Division outfit Arbroath Victoria.
