Twe n t y - t w o high school pupils have been appointed as West Lothian’s new Young Ambassadors.
Each year, two pupils from each secondary school in Scotland are chosen as Young Ambassadors to promote sport, and motivate and inspire other young people to get involved in sport in their schools, clubs and local communities.
To inspire and motivate them West Lothian’s Young Ambassadors attended a conference at Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho, which gave an opportunity to meet other Young Ambassadors from across Scotland.
The Young Ambassadors heard from inspiring sports stars including Robbie Renwick, a Scottish competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain at the Olympics and FINA world championships, as well as Scotland in the Commonwealth Games. Athletes Colin Gregor, Caitlin McClatchey and Gemma Fay also attended the conference.
The key role of a Young Ambassador is to support Active Schools locally and use the School Sport Award to influence six aspects of school sport including: extra-curricular sport provision; links to community sport opportunities; opportunities for competition; celebration of pupil achievements in sport; leadership opportunities for young people and PE in schools.
Executive councillor for education, Lawrence Fitzpatrick commented: “I would like to congratulate the Young Ambassadors on their appointment and wish them well for the year ahead. Becoming a Young Ambassador is a great accolade and provides the young person with a fantastic opportunity to learn new life skills such as organising events and motivation which will be very valuable to them in the future.”
