Whitburn squeeze past Vics

- Arbroath Vics.......... 3 Whitburn ................ 4

Whitburn booked their place in the third round of the Scottish Junior Cup but were made to fight all the way by lower league opposition.

Arbroath Victoria went in to the contest with just one win in seven North Division games, but they gave a good account of themselves against a managerless Whitburn outfit.

The visitors found themselves two goals behind before the 20 minute mark but showed tremendous spirit and fight to seal the win.

Rikki Gillespie gave Arbroath the lead after 12 minutes when he got on the end of a Josh Chalmers cross before he would turn from provider to finisher five minutes later.

The speedster got in behind the Whitburn defence and slotted the ball past Dougie Horne.

Charlie Wilson then hit the post as Vics looked to go three goals up.

The turning point, though, came just moments later as Gary Brass rifled the ball into the far corner to reduce the deficit.

And the captain would level things up just three minutes into the second half when his bulleted header flew into the top corner. James Martin would hit the woodwork as the visitors went searching for the lead, which would eventually come in the 75th minute.

Callum Robertson was able to get his head on the ball, despite being surrounded by five Vics defenders to put Whitburn in front for the first time in the contest.

And he would find the net again just two minutes later when he fired home a delightful Jordan Bain cross.

There was still time for some drama though as Ryan Lewis made it 4-3 but the Burnie held on for victory.
