A West Lothian Council apprentice has won a top award.

Connor Waldron ( 17), was named Foundation Apprentice of the Year at the recent Scottish Apprenticeship Awards, which are organised by Skills Development Scotland. Connor who is a former pupil of St Kentigern’s Academy in Blackburn, embarked on a twoyear Foundation Apprenticeship in Manufacturing and Engineering at SCQF Level 5 at West Lothian College during the summer holidays before his S4 year began.

During his first year, aged 14, Connor gave up his Friday afternoons along with summer and Easter holidays to ensure he completed his industry recognised qualifications. Connor also took additional maths classes at the college to complete his course, which in turn helped him to achieve his National Examination Level 5 in Maths. In S5, Connor’s work placement was with West Lothian Council where he gained experience in maintaining and repairing heavy plant and vehicles. This experience paid off earlier this year when Connor secured a four-year modern apprenticeship with West Lothian Council, which has put him on course to become a fully-qualified HGV Mechanic.

Executive councillor for the environment Tom Conn commented: “I know everyone is thrilled for Connor. This is really a fantastic example of the school working with West Lothian College to provide specific training. The Foundation Apprenticeship in Manufacturing and Engineering provided a solid start to Connor’s four-year modern apprenticeship with West Lothian Council, where he has fitted in very well.”

Connor said: “My family are very excited that I have won the title, and I’m still taking it in. The people in my team have been great, and there’s real satisfaction in what we do and I would like to thank them for their support.”
