Shona enjoys ultra successful season

While Max McNeill maintains superb form in US

Broxburn runner Shona Young picked up two awards following a highly successful Scottish Ultra Marathon Series.

The Lothian Running Club member finished second overall in the female category and was also the winner of the female over-40 award for ultra running this season.

The 2016 season entailed 21 races in the SUMS Championsh­ip with runners awarded points based on topfive finishes or percentage of time behind the fifth-placed runner.

Shona continued her fine career with a string of impressive results to make sure she was acknowledg­ed at the recent awards ceremony in Aberdeen.

She was also one of three LRC runners who took part in the Glen Clova Half Marathon in Kirriemuir.

Paul Young was the first of the trio home, in 50th place, in a time of 1:36.43 with Alan Robertson crossing the line in 1:44.02 for 100th spot.

Shona was just behind the two men with her time of 1: 46.44 being good enough for 115th place.

Elsewhere, running for Oklahoma City University, Uphall’s Max McNeill finished in 31st place in the 8km race at the 61st NAIA National Cross Country Championsh­ip in Illinois.

Lothian Running Club member Max recorded a time of 25.15mins in helping the Oklahoma University team to seventh place out of 37 teams as he continued his terrific start to his athletic career in the United States.

On home soil, the second match of the 2016- 17 East District Cross Country League took place at Lornshill Academy in Alloa over the weekend.

Lothian Running Club were represente­d in four of the races and recorded a number of good results.

In the team competitio­n, the senior men finished a highly respectabl­e ninth out of 37 teams and fourth from 13 in the Masters category.

Under-13 girls: 34th Hannah Steel [14.02].

Under-15 girls: 69th Nicole Dredge [19.59].

Senior women: 33rd Lana Turnbull [ 28.51], 83rd Keri Greig [36.25].

Senior men: 32nd Malcolm Lang [ 34.01], 36th Andrew King [ 34.16], 75th Colin Partridge [ 36.30], 83rd Alan Knowles[ 37.10], 87th Euan McInnes [37.10], 141st Kenton Jones [ 40.20], 153rd Alan Moffat [ 40.43], 168th Colin Eades [41.18], 220nd Martin Leadbetter [ 46.47], 223rd Kenny Mearns [47.08].
