Burn are no Hearts-breakers
Broxburn Athletic were unable to inflict a first league defeat of the season on Superleague leaders Kelty Hearts, but they can be proud of a valiant effort that saw them lose in controversial circumstances.
Kelty took the lead at Albyn Park midway through the first half when Stuart Cargill cut the ball across the box to Neil McCabe, who slotted home from close range. Athletic, who have been scoring goals for fun this term, almost pegged Hearts back on a couple of occasions.
Darren Gribben saw his free-kick from distance deflected wide of the post before Kieran Anderson could only fire at the keeper when he latched onto a through ball.
They eventually got the goal their play deserved when Sean O’Neill deflected the ball past his own keeper.
Both sides went all out for a second goal that would have won the game but, unfortunately for Max Christie’s men, it was the visitors who would get it with nine minutes left on the clock.
There was more than a hint of offside, though, as Stephen Husband was on hand to prod the ball home.
The victory saw Kelty increase their lead at the top of the Superleague table to 13 points, although their closest challengers, Bonnyrigg Rose, do have three games in hand.
Broxburn will be hoping they can grab three points when they visit Newtongrange Star this weekend.
