Bands end the year on a high note

Young musicians are celebrating an amazing end to their year.

We s t L o t h i a n ’ s young instrumentalists, their instructors, teachers and parents are marking two weeks of achievement and success.

West Lothian Schools Brass Band retained its title of Scottish Youth Brass Band Champions at Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 27 November. The band performed really well and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was delighted to bring the trophy back to West Lothian in 2016.

Eleven West Lothian Bands participated in the regional finals of the Scottish Concert Band Festival at Inveralmond Community High School on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 December, the highest number of entries from any local authority and a record entry for West Lothian.

West Lothian Schools Wind Ensemble achieved an outstanding Platinum award, following their stunning performance in the Advanced Youth Band Class. Platinum awards are rarely given as they demand the very highest standards in all aspects of performance.

Executive councillor for education Lawrence Fitzpatrick commented: “What a fabulous finish to the year for our young musicians.

“West Lothian Council is committed to maintaining highquality free music tuition in local schools and the success of our young people demonstrates the benefit of this. On behalf of West Lothian Council I would like to congratulate everyone on their success, they are a credit to their schools, their communities and West Lothian.

“Excellence like this is can only be attributed to a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment from the young musicians and the dedicated people who support them, so I would also like to congratulate all of the teachers, supporters, parents, carers who support and encourage them throughout the year.”

West Lothian Council’s, Principal Officer of Instrumental Music, Juliet Hosie, said: “It was an honour and a privilege to hear such commanding, polished and moving performances. The work and dedication required to achieve such a high standard is immense. All the bands performed at both events brilliantly, demonstrating their fine musical talents and showcasing the excellent instrumental teaching programme in West Lothian.”
