Kids jumping for joy in town

Trampoline centre teams up with charity

- Marjorie Kerr

Young people with additional support needs are jumping for joy thanks to a new partnership.

Jumpstation trampolining centre teamed up with Signpost, a charity for families of children with additional needs, to offer special sessions exclusively for them.

The sessions, which take place on a Tuesday afternoon between 4pm and 5.30pm, are adapted to be more friendly for children and young people who may find regular sessions too difficult.

Music is turned off, the area is less crowded, and staff have received information from Signpost to help them understand and support the young people.

Amanda Young from Signpost, explained: “Our families sometimes find it difficult to access the activities that others enjoy, because their children find new experiences too challenging, or have sensory issues with lights or noise. Jumpstation suits all ages, and the adaptations mean everyone can enjoy their visit.”

Linda Reape, whose son Thomas ( 5) attends the sessions, says “Thomas enjoys it because he feels free to run around, and isn’t overwhelmed by crowds of people. The staff are wonderful with him – they make sure he’s okay, and if he screams with excitement they don’t judge him.”

Josie Cameron, whose son is a teenager, comments “The ASN session on a Tuesday is great. My son John really enjoys this – it is not too busy and the number of staff they have on is really good. They are helpful, friendly, and look out for the children to make sure they are safe on the equipment while having lots of fun.”

Another parent, Lesley Walker, feels that there is a dual benefit to the sessions.

She said: “Don’t call it ‘additional needs’ call it the ‘sane parent session’. My son Aaron is so settled and having so much fun that I can drink a coffee or just relax, which is very rare as he usually won’t leave my side.”

The sessions have proved so popular with families that Jumpstation will soon begin trialling an additional session on Saturdays at 9am.

No booking is necessary to take part in a session, just turn up and jump. For more information call Jumpstation on 01506 537966, or Signpost on 01506 431123.
