Opera Bohemia will visit Linlithgow’s theatre
Group to perform Tchaikovsky classic
A cast of young professional singers comes to Linlithgow for one night only this Saturday (December 10).
Opera Bohemia will perform Tchaikovsky’s most popular opera, ‘Eugene Onegin’ in Linlithgow Academy Theatre (7.30pm).
Mulled wine and mince pies will be served in the interval, and all are welcome.
The story, based on Pushkin’s famous novel, tells of a wealthy young man who comes to regret his nonchalant dismissal of a young woman’s love.
The opera is staged, with a piano and violin playing Tchaikovsky’s magical score.
Leading Lady Catriona Clark, playing Tatyana, has performed with opera companies around the world, and has sung with Kiri te Kanawa, Alfie Boe and Bryn Terfel in London’s Albert Hall.
The cast, all of whom have studied at music colleges in the UK, and who have solo careers in opera and oratorio, include Cheryl Forbes from Falkirk, who studied at London’s Guildhall, RCS Glasgow and in New York. She has appeared in major concert halls in the UK and has performed for Scottish Opera.
Opera Bohemia exists as a nonprofit making organisation, and aims to produce more operatic performances across Scotland, to create opportunities for professional artists in all areas of opera and to introduce opera to first time opera goers and a younger generation in a dynamic way.
They tour their operas to smaller venues in Scotland where the opportunity to experience their modern interpretation of these famous operas, performed by rising operatic stars, has proved hugely popular.
The cast is gathered together in Glasgow for just seven days before the opening performance.
The rehearsal period is extremely intense with all costumes, scenery, lighting and props being produced in that time.
The director, John Wilkie, has produced operas for major companies, including The Royal Opera at Covent Gaarden, Scottish Opera, Garsington Opera, pera Holland Park and Danish National Opera.
Linlithgow Arts Guild is delighted to have secured this production which is also touring to Helensburgh and Dumfries. The opera will be sung in Russian, with English subtitles to enable the audience to follow the script.
The performance is sponsored by Peterkin and Kidd, Linlithgow.
Tickets priced £12, £5 for students £5 and free to school pupils are available online from www. LinlithgowArtsGuild.co.uk, from Far from the Madding Crowd and other outlets in Linithgow, or at the door on the night.
