Showing traits of champions

-

Winning ugly. It’s one of the traits of champions and in the last couple of weeks we’ve done just that.

We all love a big win – comfortable, no nerves – like at the start of the season, when we were sweeping teams aside with relative ease and scoring four or five times.

But there is something just as satisfying about winning ugly – especially when it comes about in the last few minutes of the game.

Let’s not kid ourselves. It wasn’t a good performance last weekend and we’ve played a lot better this season in defeat.

It sounds strange saying this, but, in my view, that’s a positive sign.

Games like last weekend’s against Albion Rovers we would have lost earlier in the season. This young team are learning all the time and it’s really good to see.

It was also encouraging to see Nicky Cadden back to his exciting best, and the way our substitutes were able to change the game in our favour.

I’ve long said we have the strongest squad of players in the division and that was the difference on Saturday.

With Danny Mullen and Mikey Miller both out we could still call upon the likes of Raffa and Liam Watt and still have quality like Dale Carrick to come on from the bench to make a massive difference on the game.

This huge month of games continues this weekend as we head to Stranraer and we all know what they are capable of. Our last visit there was one of the worst in our history and aided in relegating us last season.

But a victory in that contest, heading into our vital game in hand against Stenhousemuir on Tuesday night, could really be the biggest result of our season thus far.

Two victories in these games will see us open up a gap, so I’m sure the fans will get right behind the Lions as we continue the fight to become champions.
