Have a safe Xmas

-

It’s been a busy time for the police here in West Lothian in the run up to Christmas.

As we look forward to the start of 2017 and the festive party season continues, it seems a good time to remind everyone of the simple steps that can be taken to help keep you safe on your night out or when you are driving to visit friends and family.

Plan ahead before you go out and to think about how you’re going to get home at the end of the night.

Always carry enough money so you can afford to get home at the end of the night or better still, persuade a sober friend or family member to pick you up. You can always return the favour another time.

Look after your keys. Imagine arriving home after a night out only to find you have lost your house keys and having to think of a plan B.

Don’t leave your drinks unattended to help avoid getting your drink spiked and don’t leave your phone on the table when you go to the toilet or the bar.

Stay clear of drugs and other illegal substances, especially new psychoactive substances. These are often mistakenly referred to as ‘legal highs’ but despite this title they are in no way safe. Updating your Facebook status when on a night out to let your friends know what you are up to may seem harmless enough, however the more drink you consume, the more fearless you become and you can forget that inappropriate statuses or messages may come back to haunt you! Remember what is posted online can stay online forever.

For those of you that are driving over the New Year period, ensure that you check the weather forecast and road conditions.

If weather is poor, ask yourself if you really need to travel and consider alternative routes or modes of transport. Always allow extra time for your journey, ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and always let people know where you are going. Make it your resolution to stay safe over this festive period.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas from all at West Lothian Police.
