Capital gain for East Calder star

Borland on top form in Premier League event

- Sports reporter

East Calder’s William Borland added to his collection of titles thanks to victory in Edinburgh last week.

The Premier League darts event, held in the Murrayfield Sports Bar, saw five players from the West Calder and District Darts League entering, although only the talented Borland progressed through to the quarterfinals.

The West Calder and District star took the plaudits, and then the title, with terrific performances that included winning the final in a last- leg showdown.

Top scorers on the night from the West Calder and District League saw Rab Dick from Kirknewton rattling in a cracking 13- dart game, and Graeme Bird fired in two maximums and a 19-dart leg.

But it was Borland who shone the brightest on the night with four 180s along with a stunning 13 legs of 16 darts or less.

In local league action, the Bathgate League on Friday night saw a head-tohead between Bentswood Inn and Cross Tavern with Bentswood repeating the result from their last meeting with a surprising 9-0 victory.

The win sees last season’s champions hold a commanding four-point lead at the top of the table.

On Saturday, several West Lothian players took part in the annual McKechnie Open Doubles competition held in Edinburgh, with 10 pairs making the trip.

The top performers were Rab Dick and Graeme Bird who lost out in the semifinals to eventual winners Harry Toddman and Ryan Murray of Edinburgh.

The West Lothian pairs who competed were: Paul McCaig and Wullie Wilson, William Borland and Jim Mitchell, Graeme Bird and Rab Dick, Gillian Mitchell and Denise Bird, William Harraughty and Paul Weir, Tam Brown and Micky Rice, Colin Robertson and Arran Edwards, Ryan Kelly and Stevie Scott, and Calvin Fleming and Stephan Colthart.

Bird and Dick were the ones on the best form on the day, though, as Graeme fired in a cracking 158-game shot while his partner added two century finishes of 120 and 110.

The pair also recorded the fastest game with a brilliant 12- dart leg although they were unable to lift the title.
