Wells set for Ben Fund race

-

Ricky Wells will be the first Edinburgh rider in action in the UK this year after being confirmed as taking part in the Ben Fund Bonanza at Ashfield Stadium in Glasgow on March 12.

Ahead of his first year in Monarchs colours, Ricky is currently on home soil in California but has added the Bonanza to his plans this season.

He commented:“It’s my first ever one believe it or not. They haven’t asked me before.

“I was going to do a practise session with Brian Karger in Italy. Last season Brian staged it in France, but it was rained off so I went all that way then turned around and came home again.

“I was going to Italy but it makes more sense to come to the Bonanza at Ashfield. I’ll probably also do the first meeting at Berwick.

“Riding in meetings is better than just practising. You do a bit and you do OK and you think you’re ready but then when you get to the tapes for your first race and it’s different.”

He added:“I’m happy to do it of course, you never know when you might have to call in the Fund and thankfully so far I haven’t had to.”

“I like riding Ashfield, I think the only reason some riders don’t like going there is that in recent times Glasgow have had strong teams, particularly their top three.”

The Ben Fund Bonanza is an annual meeting organised by the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund, a UK charity which supports riders sidelined either temporarily or permanently due to injuries sustained while racing.

The Monarchs kick-off their new Championship season on April 7 at home to Scunthorpe Scorpions before travelling to Berwick the following day.
