- Marjorie Kerr

A Bathgate primary school has received a top accolade from Unicef.

Windyknowe Primary has been presented with the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Level 2 Award, the highest possible award, for its work putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. To mark the occasion Scotland Children’s Commissioner Tam Baillie visited the school to present the accolade.

The Level 2 Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) is granted by Unicef UK to schools which have fully embedded children’s rights throughout the school. Head teacher, Rita Angus, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised with a Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Level 2 Award. It is important to us that all our pupils are respected, included and valued and that they can fulfill their potential within a positive and happy environment. Everyone has worked so hard to achieve fantastic accolade which recognises the high level of commitment of school staff, our pupils, parents and carers, and the wider school community.”

Vice- chair of the education policy development scrutiny panel (PDSP), David Dodds: “On behalf of the council, we would like to congratulate everyone at Windyknowe Primary School on achieving the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Level 2 Award. It is a fantastic accolade and recognises the excellent work the school has undertaken in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work by staff and pupils to create an environment of genuine mutual respect across the whole school community. The council is very proud of what the school has achieved.”
