Series of events attracts pupils from all over

- Callum Carson

There have been a number of girls events taking place on West Lothian Secondary Schools’ competition calendar throughout the past few weeks.

The S4- 6 girls netball and S1- 3 girls rugby took place at St Margaret’s Academy in January.

More than 50 girls from seven schools competed in the netball competition which was supported by the West Lothian Wildcats netball club.

Meanwhile, the rugby event saw 30 players from across six schools battling it out in a five-a-side touch competition which was supported by both Linlithgow and Livingston rugby clubs.

The first-ever competitive girls only handball competition in West Lothian secondary school sport took place at Bathgate Academy, with teams from seven schools competing.

More than 50 pupils battled it out for the top prize with teams entered from Bathgate, Broxburn, Deans, Inveralmond, Linlithgow, St Kentigern’s and St Margaret’s.

And it was St Margaret’s who come out on top after a round robin tournament just ahead of Broxburn and Deans.

The S1-3 girls only basketball also took place at the end of February, hosted by Deans CHS, with nine schools competing in the second of two competitions for this age group.

It was another keenly contested event with St Margaret’s the eventual winners ahead of James Young, Inveralmond and Deans.

There were also fine efforts by the teams fro Broxburn, Linlithgow, St Kentigern’s, West Calder and Whitburn .

The tournament was a huge success with more than 60 girls attending, while Mark Stevenson from the West Lothian Wolves was on hand to support the event and to encourage more girls to get involved in club basketball.

Well done to all the girls competing in the above competitions in what looks like an area of growth for school and club sport in West Lothian.
