Survey: Satisfied with their life inWL

- Sean O’Neil

West Lothian people are the least likely in Scotland to be very satisfied with their life according to a survey by the UK Government.

In a study into the personal wellbeing of the public only 24.75 per cent of West Lothian’s people voted Very High in response to their life satisfaction - the lowest in Scotland.

However, when High and Very High responses were combined 81.86 per cent of people were satisfied with their lives, sitting around the national average of 81.69 per cent.

In terms of happiness the area is the twelfth happiest place in the country, out of 33 regions, with 33.66 per cent of people saying they were very happy - again close to the national average of 33.24 per cent.

However, the area is higher than the Scottish average in terms of unhappiness with 10.19 per cent of people saying they experience low levels of happiness.

This puts West Lothian fifth in the table for low levels of happiness throughout Scotland with the national average being 9.03 per cent.

The survey also showed that West Lothian is one of the least stressful places in Scotland to live with only 18.7 per cent reporting high levels of anxiety - the 10th lowest in the country.

A spokesperson for the West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership said that there were services available to anyone feeling unhappy or anxious in the area.

The spokesperson said: “There are a wide range of services available to support West Lothian residents who feel unhappy or anxious.

“Most people would see their General Practitioner ( GP) in the first instance, who would refer people onto appropriate services for their needs.

“This could range from social prescribing such as self-help websites or reading materials, benefiting from exercise through Xcite gyms or the Green Gym at Howden, or support from psychiatric professionals in more serious cases.”
