Age is no barrier for Sibbald at Cauther

- Callum Carson

New West Calder United boss Gary Sibbald believes his lack of years won’t be an issue after being appointed to his first managerial role at the age of 25.

Sibbald, who had been coaching at the club this term, took over the reins at the Cauther after boss Greig Mitchell stood down due to other commitments.

And, while the new man might have little experience at the top, he certainly doesn’t lack passion and enthusiasm.

He commented: “My background is coaching. I started out doing a HNC in Sports Coaching after I left school and I now have my UEFA B Licence, so I have experience in that side of things and being a manager was my ultimate end goal, so I’m delighted to have been offered the role.

“It certainly earlier than I was expecting but I’m thrilled to be given this opportunity — I wouldn’t have taken it if I didn’t think I could do it.

“It’s my first managerial role and I do have no experience in terms of things like player recruitment — which I’ll be taking on — but I’m a big believer in challenging yourself and taking yourself out of your comfort zone.”

He added: “Greig had the belief in me to bring me in to the club and he’s someone who has become a close friend.

“I know he’s going to be sticking around at the club on some sort of role with the committee and he’s going to be someone I can lean on and ask for advice.

“I’d really like to thank the club and both Greig and Derek Johnston, who will be staying on as my assistant, for having the belief in me and giving me this chance.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge which starts this weekend with a tough game against a very good Pumpherston side.”
