Man admits death attack

Street assault on victim

- Marjorie Kerr

A thug who punched a man who later died has been convicted.

At the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday ( March 21), Mariusz Winiarski pled guilty to the culpable homicide of Brian Stirling in the town’s King Street on Saturday, December 17, 2016.

Winiarski subjected the 54- year- old to a violent attack during which the victim suffered a serious head injury.

Mr Stirling was taken to St John’s Hospital where he passed away later that day.

An inquiry by Police Sc o t l a n d ’ s Ma jo r Investigation Team was carried out following this incident and 35-year-old Winiarski was detained and charged.

Speaking following the outcome, Detective Inspector Dave Pinkney, from the MIT, said: “At no time during this totally unprovoked attack on Brian Stirling did Mariusz Winiarski consider the consequences of his action and this has ultimately resulted in Brian’s tragic death. Winiarski’s guilty plea is testament to the overwhelming evidence gat h e red against him by the Major Investigation Team and spares Brian’s family and fiancée from reliving this horrific ordeal if it were to go to a full trial. My thoughts and sympathies are with Brian’s loved ones at this time and I would like to thank them all for their assistance and support during our investigation.”

Sentence was deferred and Winiarski was remanded in custody .
