Appeal on Byrne ban for betting

- Callum Carson

Livingston have launched an appeal with the SFA over the severity of midfielder Shaun Byrne’s ban for betting on football.

The 23- year- old was hit with an eight game ban – three of which were suspended until 2018 – after admitting to breaking strict rules regarding betting at a hearing on Thursday.

It came on the same day that former Cowdenbeath player Dean Brett was hit with a four-game immediate ban for gambling on football

Former Dunfermline star Byrne, who is aiming for his second consecutive League One winners’ medal after joining the Lions in the summer, missed Saturday’s victory over Stranraer but is free to play until the result of his appeal and was in the starting line-up for Tuesday night’s home clash against Stenhousemuir.

Livingston head coach David Hopkin said: “It’s gone to an appeal and that’s why he was able to play tonight (Tuesday).

“It’s now something that the club and the SFA will sort out between themselves.”
