Fundraising for orphan ruth

-

pupils at a West Lothian school have raised cash to help a ugandan girl with her education.

Broxburn academy pupils raised more than £200 to help a girl who lost both her parents to HIV and has no one to help with school fees. they were inspired to act after reading a story about a ugandan charity in the Courier.

s3 geography students learning about shanty towns and the lack of education for girls in developing countries, decided that they wanted to do something.

Word soon spread around the school and more s3 classes got involved.

the teenagers read a story in the Courier about robert and susan Comrie, both retired West Lothian maths teachers, who were asking for support for a school in uganda.

the Friends of Magale helps orphaned children in Eastern uganda and robert Comrie visited Broxburn academy and spoke to the pupils about their work.

He contacted the school principal in uganda and within 48 hours the pupils in Broxburn heard about ruth and decided to help.

at the school’s Easter concert they sold tea, coffee and baking to raise funds.

a school spokesperson said:“Logan’s cookies were excellent, rebecca’s granny’s butterfly cakes were delicious and amy produced lovely truffles in their own presentation boxes. they were all expertly sold by Katie.

“once the audience heard about the venture they were very generous.

“as a result we raised £160 which has now risen to £200 due to further donations. Hopefully this will be the first of many ventures so ruth can say:‘I was educated by Broxburn academy’.”
