United see off Super side

-

Blackburn United secured their spot in the quarter finals of the Fife & Lothian’s Cup with a 2-1 win over Superleague side Penicuik Athletic.

Despite early pressure from the higher division side, where United relied on‘keeper Gavin King to keep the score level, it was Blackburn who took the lead through a fantastic team goal after 38 minutes.

The seven man move began on the left with Lee Meekison and ended when Campbell rolled a pass back to Herriot on the right who lifted the ball into space for McQuillan to burst onto and steer a shot between Easton and his left hand post.

Just as Blackburn finished the first half with a bang so Penicuik began the second period with Gay curling a teasing cross in from the right that Sommerville threw himself at to head past the exposed King.

United didn’t let the loss of a quick equaliser derail them and shortly after the hour mark re-established their lead in spectacular style with McQuillan galloping onto a King clearance , and , spotting Easton off his line, rifled a thunderous 25-yarder over his head and into the net.

Five minutes from time a great John Drummond block on MacDonald prevented what seemed a certain equaliser before Blackburn nearly extended their lead with two minutes to go but McQuillan’s shot was pushed over the bar by Easton.

Blackburn United now move into the Quarter Finals of the cup where a tie against Musselburgh Athletic awaits them.
