Benidorm or bust

- Sean O’Neil

Two businessmen will travel from West Lothian to Benidorm in a £325 car to raise money for a good cause.

Ali Shabbir and Tony McNee will take part in the Benidorm or Bust rally to raise cash for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

The duo will leave West Lothian on Monday (May 1) in a 14-year-old Skoda Octavia and travel to London where the ‘banger’ rally to Benidorm will begin the next day.

On the Tuesday the duo will travel in convoy from London with 65 other teams to Dover where they will catch the boat to Calais and then off to Rouen in France.

Day two will see them go from Rouen to Bordeux before they travel on to Zaragoza on day three.

The two friends hope to arrive in Benidorm by Saturday - providing their car lasts the journey.

Ali said that the two car enthusiast friends thought the rally would be a great way to raise money for a good cause.

He said: “We’ve had friends and family who have benefitted from the hospital and they have always been great to them.

“We’re both car daft and we love a challenge.

“It’s a good drive and it will help donate money to the charity.”

The businessmen, Tony owns Tony’s Taxis in Harthill and Ali owns Euro Hire Drive in Bathgate, said that local businesses had really got behind them.

Ali said: “People have been very generous, they have a heart of gold when it comes to charity.”

Tony thanked Knowehead Garage in Eastfield who did all the repairs on the Skoda for free as well as all the other businesses who had helped them out.

He said: “I just want to thank the garage for the new parts and doing all the repairs on the car for free, and to thank all the local businesses who have sponsored us and had there logo advertised on the car and anyone else who has contributed.”

The friends have raised over £2000 for the charity so far and say that every penny they raise will go to the charity and all the costs will funded by them.

Ali said: “All the money is going to the charity, we’ll pay for everything else out of our own pockets, the motor, the fuel, everything.”

They also plan on donating their car to the Busy Bee charity in Benidorm when they get there so the Spanish charity can sell it on.
