Gary’s boots are made for walking

- Staff reporter

a musician is swapping his instruments for walking boots when he takes on a gruelling sponsored walk.

gary shanks will attempt to walk from the Forth Bridge to the very top of scotland at John O’ groats on May 10 to help three good causes.

His journey will take him through Inverkeithing, Cowdenbeath, glenfarg, perth, pitlochry, Newtonmore, aviemore and Inverness, to name a few in a challenge that is the equivalent of walking the West Highland Way three times.

But this marathon effort is very worthwhile, as gary is raising money for alzheimer’s scotland, the rosebery Centre for people with dementia and for rory Milne, Livingston boy living with autism who desperately needs funds for a therapy sensory unit.

gary, who runs Musicalmind, a social media platform that brings live music to those living at home with dementia or disability, said:“I’m not going to lie, in spite of ongoing training and preparation this is a truly mammoth, daunting and energy sapping challenge to take on. It’s the equivalent of walking the West Highland three times without stopping, however I aim to fill the journey with music and images to share with everyone.

“this will help keep me motivated as I go and also it helps me to give a bit back to those who’ve been generous enough and kind enough to help me.”

gary continued:“I’ve set a target of £3000 to fundraiser for three amazing and inspiring groups of charities and individuals; it would make such a difference for them.”
