AJ and Al record and write their songs

- Debbie Hall

Two musicians are proving it’s never too late to pick up an instrument and make music.

Pals AJ Mcleod and Al Kerr have been writing and recording their own songs at home and posting their efforts on YouTube for everyone to enjoy.

The men, who live Stoneyburn and Livingston, are both in their 60s have put the days of performing gigs behind them, but wanted to show that making music if one of the many things people can do to keep their minds active after retirement.

Al said: “We decided in July 2015 to record some of my original Country songs and this expanded to include AJ Mcleod originals.

“A home- recorded CD was produced and released in August 2016 for friends and family

“We are no longer performing gigs but wanted to show among other things that the mind is kept active after retirement and this is one way of highlighting this point.

“Also its showing for very little outlay a good quality home produced CD can be made.”

Later a friend of the duo made a video for one of the songs from the CD, a wistful Country ballad called ‘Mary (Till the Cows Come Home)’.

This song was also featured among others on the CD on UK Country Radio and the video is one of more than 20 videos now up on the AJ Mcleod YouTube page.

The music and videos are also available on the The A J Mcleod club Facebook page where people can listen to songs and watch the videos.

And the pair now have a worldwide following and fan base.

AJ Mcleod has performed with various show bands rock bands but mostly country solo, duo and band work and has performed in various venues all over Europe throughout his career with country/showbands such as The Stoneymountain Boys, Sundance, Cincinnatti, Redwood county and Cobra.

Al Kerr has been writing and recording home produced songs for a few years now and was previously in various local bands duos and trios with A J McLeod and others.
