Whitburn crash out after feisty cup clash

Dundee win 4-3 on penalties Whitburn ................. 2 Dundee North End ... 2

-

It was a bad week for Whitburn as the league strugglers crashed out of the East of Scotland Cup on Saturday before losing again midweek.

Whitburn hosted Dundee North End in the quarter final of the D J Laing East of Scotland Cup in what was a feisty affair between the two sides that saw the referee show two red cards and number of yellows.

The visitors raced into an early two- goal lead, with Dayle Robertson netting both.

However, the match then turned on its head after a mass bust-up saw a Dundee player sent for an early bath.

Whitburn pulled back the two-goal deficit through a double from Jordan Bain as Dundee were reduced to nine men following a second yellow for one of their players.

Whitburn could have gone on to win it near the end as they hit the post, but the game ended in a draw and had to be decided on penalties.

And it was the Dundee side who held their nerve to progress 4-3 after the spot kicks.

Things did not get much better for Whitburn as they also lost on Tuesday evening by a single goal away to Arniston Rangers.

The 1-0 defeat leaves Whitburn third from bottom of the Premier league, although they have games in hand over both Armadale below them and St Andrew’s above.

In the Superleague, three games in a week for Linlithgow Rose meant they could only return four points as they try to find a way out of their relegation scrap.

The first of the three games came last Wednesday against Hill of Beath and less than 24 hours after Rose had parted company with management team Todd Lumsden and Steven Hislop. But the caretaker team of Jimmy Crease and Windy Miller could do little to change Rose’s fortunes as Linlithgow went down 1-0 thanks to a goal early in the second half by Greig Smith.

Rose’s next game came away to Musselburgh on Saturday, a team that started the weekend one place above Linlithgow.

A decent performance saw Rose grab a 2-2 draw that kept them in touching distance of Musselburgh.

Things continued to progress for Linlithgow as the week went on and Monday saw them take all three points with a 3- 1 victory over fellow West Lothian team and bottom of the table side Fauldhouse.
