- Marjorie Kerr

a West Lothian school has beaten competition from across scotland to be selected as a finalist at this year’s scottish Education awards.

Broxburn academy has been shortlisted for the Enterprise and Employability across Learning (secondary) award ahead of next month’s ceremony.

the school has been recognised for their consistent introduction of initiatives and partnerships which develop and nurture skills for learning, life and work.

the scottish Education awards recognise and reward the people who dedicate their lives to children and young people and showcase the valuable work and innovation happening in classrooms across the country.

among the initiatives introduced at Broxburn academy is the sQa approved Enterprise and Employability course for the whole of s5 which sees businesses work with pupils to help them prepare for employment.

pupils are given one-to-one interviews with businesses and then offered feedback on their performance.

the school’s Youth and philanthropy Initiative ensures school involvement with all year groups participating in raising money for a local charity.

the senior nurture group grow organic vegetables and fruit which are produced in the school grounds. the produce is sold to pupils, staff and the wider community.

and to make sure parents are involved in pupils’ learning, the school’s Building Learning power initiative offers workshops to parents and carers where they come into school and learn about developing learning abilities.

this helps develop confidence, resilience and the need to be reflective about learning.

speaking about Broxburn academy making the awards’ finals, teacher steven Daly, the school’s transition to work co-ordinator, said: “I am delighted that the hard work of the staff has been recognised. We are working with the changes in education to get pupils ready for the world of work.”

all of the finalists will be invited to attend an awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in glasgow on Wednesday, June 7, where judges will unveil the winners.
