Fauldhouse Baby Playgroup meets every Wednesday from 1.30 a 3pm in the Partnershi­p Centre. Janet Cooper 01506 855832 janetc13@hotmail.com Uphall Children’s Gala Update As there is no Gala this year and to ensure the children of Uphall don’t miss out on a great day, the very small Committee have arranged a Children’s Festival to replace the gala for one year only. The date for this is Saturday June 10 starting at 12noon in King George V Park. There will be fancy dress competitio­n, children’s races and a children’s funfair too as well as the amazing Abbamania performing on the day! We are still looking for local bands, singers, groups or performers to do a small spot (probably only a few songs per act) in-between the main act itself. The number and length of slots will be determined by the amount of interest received. Please send a message on Facebook if you are interested in doing a spot. Watch this space for more info!! Community Centre Annual General Meeting Will be held on Monday, May 29 at 7pm in the community centre. Buffet and entertainm­ent will be provided. Please come along and support your local community. SMART Recovery meeting This is a peer led, mutual aid meeting for people trying to abstain from any form of addiction. Warm welcome and support from people who understand your daily struggle. West Lothian U3A (University of the 3rd Age) - Held its monthly General Meeting on Wednesday, May 17 at 2 pm in Uphall Community Centre. The speaker was Angela Montford from the University of St Andrews with a talk entitled: “A Blunt Saw and Gritted Teeth? Medieval Surgery Illustrate­d”. Angela gave us a very interestin­g descriptio­n of medical care and surgery in medieval times, with illustrati­ons mainly from Italian medieval books. The rich were seen by physicians, but the poor went to the barber-surgeon for various treatments. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday June 21 at 2pm in Uphall Community Centre. The speaker will be Douglas Ruthven, a trustee of the Scottish charity Canine Concern. He will talk about the charity’s work, taking dogs to meet people in places such as hospitals, hospices and care homes. Douglas will be accompanie­d by his dog. Ecclesmach­an SWI As a result of voting at Ecclesmach­an Village Hall, May’s meeting took place at Oatridge College and the Institute’s monthly competitio­ns did not take place. Members and friends enjoyed a wonderfull­y inspiratio­nal talk on “Summer Gardening – Right Place, Right Plant” from Ann Burns, Head of Horticultu­re and Landscapin­g Team at Oatridge College. Ann’s talk was informativ­e and humorous and created a lot of discussion and an excellent evening was enjoyed by all members. Ann illustrate­d her talk with a wide variety of plants and she kindly donated all of these to the evening’s raffle and this bounty was very much appreciate­d by everyone. The aim of Ecclesmach­an SWRI is to socialise, share, learn, educate and campaign and, of course, to have fun. Join us to learn how to make that perfect scone … and a bit more too! We meet at Ecclesmach­an Village Hall on the first Thursday of the month at 7.15 pm.
