Draw means Burnie are safe

-

Whitburn .............. 2 Glenrothes ............ 2

Whitburn’s draw with Glenrothes means they only have to avoid a 10-goal defeat this weekend at relegated Dundee Violet to retain their Premier League status for a second season.

The Burnie have had a challenging season which has seen them use three managers and fail to live up to the club’s expectations, but they appear set to compete in the second tier next season after securing a vital point in the pouring rain at Central Park.

After both teams passed up early chances, Whitburn took the lead in the eighth minute when Chris Patrick fired home from the edge of the box.

But Burnie goalie Dougie Horne let an effort slip through his fingers which was bundled over the line at the back post as Glenrothes equalised.

The keeper would make amends with a fine double save 10 minutes later and that would prove crucial as the hosts promptly went up the other end and regained their advantage. Horne again produced a top save early in the second half to keep his side in front but he could do nothing when the visitors were awarded a dubious penalty just before the hour mark which was duly slotted home.

While the hosts simply needed to avoid defeat, there was no sitting back as they went for the win.

Taylor and Jordan Bain went close before Glens were reduced to 10 men. Despite that they almost took the lead when a free-kick deflected off a home defender and clipped the post but the Burnie held on for the vital point.
