Diamond couple celebrate

-

a West Lothian couple who spent years living together in africa have celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary.

adam and anna Wood, who live in West Calder, celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 1 after getting married on that date in 1957.

anna (82) trained as a nurse and midwife in her early years before travelling to Zambia to join adam in 1958 where she worked in a hospital in ndola.

adam (84) worked in africa for the Zambian Forest service for 16 years before returning to scotland with anna in 1972, but not before having two children.

after returning home anna worked as a nursing sister at the neonatal paediatric unit at Bangour Village Hospital for 10 years, while adam took a job working as a teacher in the science Department at West Calder High school before retiring at 65. anna also worked as a community midwife throughout West Lothian, while adam was very involved in environmental teaching , the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and the guide Dog association.

the couple were delighted to receive a visit from West Lothian provost tom Kerr and Lord Lieutenant Isobel Brydie on the day of their anniversary and later enjoyed a champagne supper at home.

they then celebrated with friends and family on June 3 at Harburn golf Club.

adam said:“We have led a varied and exciting life together and have many good memories to share so that we always have something to talk about and that, as much as anything, means that we have put in 60 years of care and attention to each other.

“the other important factor is that long ago I learned the value of two little words ‘yes, dear’and I use them all the time.”
