Town redevelopment kicks off

- Sean O’Neil

Works to complete the £350,000 redevelopment of Bathgate’s pedestrian precinct are set to re-start this month.

the next phase of the programme to transform george street will start on Monday June 5 and will take an estimated 24 weeks to finish.

BID & town Centre Manager nairn pearson said:“We would ask for patience from local businesses, residents and visitors while the final stage of the paving improvements for the george street pedestrian precinct are completed.

“the works have been scheduled to start following Bathgate procession and be completed before the Christmas in Bathgate celebrations in December to avoid impacting on major events on the town.”

paving improvements to the steelyard and st David’s square areas were completed in 2011, and this programme will see the remaining areas improved, between st David’s square and steelyard, and from st David’s square to the top of the precinct.

over £350,000 is being invested as part of a joint programme between West Lothian Council and town centre Business Improvement District (BID) company Enterprising Bathgate to improve the streetscape of the town.

Mr pearson said: “the previous works have made sure that Bathgate now contains a great events space in the steelyard, and a new civic area at st David’s square, and we are confident this final phase will deliver more improvements for Bathgate.

“the council and Enterprising Bathgate will be working together to ensure that the town centre remains open for business, building on lessons learned from the previous phase of the programme. Local businesses will be kept informed of activities, and every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Local residents and businesses affected by the works will receive a letter with full details, and advance notification signage will be placed within the town centre.
