Broxburn Civic Week set to make a big return

- Sean O’Neil

The Broxburn Gala Day committee has announced that thanks to the support of the town’s three primary schools the Civic Week is returning as part of the pre-gala day celebrations.

The gala will be held at Albyn Park on August 26 and Civic Week, which is centred round the children of Broxburn, will run from June 19 to the June 23.

Jen Howie, gala day chair, said: “The new committee that has been running for four to five years now is always looking at ways to improve the Galaday year on year.

“It occurred to us what a brilliant idea it would be to bring back the Civic Week as a precursor to the gala itself and what better way than to engage with the local primary schools. At the end of the day the gala day has always been about the children.

“We ran the idea past the primary schools and I am extremely pleased to confirm that response was as pleasing as it was exciting.”

Each school will now hold a separate event from Monday through to Wednesday, hosting bake-offs, talent shows, fashion shows, plays, musicals and sport challenges.

Ms Howie said: “The schools were actually more excited than we were. The results will be kept and on Friday June 23 at Strathbock Partnership we will have a real extravaganza with prize giving, music and dance from local groups and lots of other entertainment.

“We have also asked the schools to nominate any children for Special Recognition Awards which could be for charity work, care at home, academic recognition or recovering from a serious illness.”

Ms Howie also outlined the plans for this year’s Galaday.

She said: “With a huge amount of voluntary work put in by the committee and assistance from local businesses and community groups, and of course the team at Albyn who host the event on the day, we are pleased to say that the parade is now back as one of the biggest on the circuit.

“This year the emphasis will be in the park and focus was bringing back that real sense of community spirit.

“That’s why in the park this year we will have community and charitable organisations who can benefit from hopefully a big crowd on the day making the generous contributions that they do.

“We will have a wide range of entertainment for all ages and this will be financed entirely by the committee with tremendous support from the local councils.”

The theme of the Gala this year is board and computer games. If anyone would like to join the parade and requires a float/lorry please get in touch by June 10 by calling 07808193984.
