Borland sees off Open all-comers
Willie’s on fire in Uphall’s Volunteer Arms
William Borland added to his ever-growing list of titles by being crowned the Volunteer Arms Open Singles champion.
The youngster got the better of Jim Mitchell in the final, winning 6-2, as his fine form continued.
As ever, there was a brilliant turnout for the event, run by Martin Deegan and he must be thanked, along with his hard- working volunteers, for putting on such a brilliant event.
With players as far afield as Glasgow participating in the event, some of the best players from the central belt made their way to Uphall but it was two local players who progressed to the showdown.
Borland would prove too strong for Mitchell as the destination of the £160 prize for first place never really looked in serious doubt.
There were some terrific individual displays throughout the day with Kieran Bird hitting a pair of 180s, though Borland led the way on that front with five, while David Nisbet’s stunning 136 was the top checkout of the day.
The West Calder and District Darts League ended this week and it was a Stirrup Stane double with the Wanderers being crowned Premier League champions and the Championship trophy going the way of the Indians.
The Cawburn Assassins edged out The Volunteer Highway Men on leg difference to take the runner-up spot in the Premier League while the Cawburn Highlanders fell at the final hurdle in the Championship.
Leading the way for the majority of the season, they slumped to a 7-2 loss in the final set of games to the Grand Central Railroaders.
It was yet another brilliant season with many top-class players participating and the fact that none of the team went undefeated speaks volumes about the standard of the league, with every team having the ability to take points from anyone else.
Meanwhile, in the Murrayfield Sports Bar Premier League, Kieran Bird played superbly in winning two games with ease, sealing 7-0 and 7-3 wins on the night.
Jim Mi t c h e l l s c o red a comfortable 7- 1 win which included legs of 17 and 19 darts while Scott Baillie netted an 18-darter and 118 game-shot on his way to a 7-2 triumph.
Rab Dick was the only West Lothian player who travelled through to the capital to suffer a defeat as he lost 7-3 but did hit a 180 and 100 game-shot.
This week’s scores keeps all the West Lothian players in the hunt for Platinum league places.
