Jim wins thriller to end season on high
Mitchell takes Kirknewton Open Singles title
Jim Mitchell clinched the Kirknewton Open Singles title as he ended the season in fine fashion.
He bounced back from the disappointment of an early exit in the doubles event earlier that day to seal a dramatic 3-2 win over William Millar.
Both Mitchell and Millar had to fight all the way in the previous round to reach the showdown final and it was the latter who took the initiative with a pair of excellent finishes putting him 2- 1 to the good.
But Mitchell wasn’t to be outdone and fired in a couple of maximums on his way to taking the title by the narrowest of margins.
Elsewhere in a busy week of darts, the West Calder and District Darts League held their Singles Championship.
An excellent event saw just about all the top league players in attendance and the darts on offer didn’t disappoint.
The grand final saw a classic youth versus experience matchup with Davie Aitken battling it out against 18-year-old Kieran Bird.
And it was the experience of Aitken that proved crucial with an 11-darter showing his ability as his 28+ dart average was simply too good for Bird.
So congratulations to Davie for being crowned West Calder and District Darts League Singles Champion for 2017.
There was some excellent scoring on the six boards in use on the day with maximum hitters being Kieran Bird, William Borland, Scott Baker, Arran Edwards, Rex Brady, Gordon Bruce, Callum Wilkinson, Graham Borland and Davie Aitken.
Top-class finishing and century check-outs came the way of Davie Aitken (153), Derek Carmichael (148), Paul McCaig (120), Arran Edwards (117), Graham Borland ( 116), William Borland ( 114), Graeme Bird ( 113) and Gordon Bruce (100).
Everyone associated with the league would like to thank the committee, Connie Bamburry and John MacDonald for an excellently run tournament as well as all the players who have contributed to a tremendous season and the league sponsors and hosts, The Cawburn Sports Bar, along with all the staff.
It has certainly been a season to remember with the standard of play showing just how deep the talent pool is in West Lothian.
While this season has come to an end, there’s no rest for the wicked with the summer league set to start on Monday.
The Courier will continue to give weekly updates on the summer season.
