Students and staff from a West Lothian high school took to the stage for a special musical performance recently.

This re-imagining of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ at Howden Park Centre in Livingston, involved students from every year group at St Margaret’s Academy and featured input from many departments across the school, with the expressive arts faculty playing a key role.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’ is a dark musical comedy involving a man-eating plant that grows to a gigantic size.

The play follows the romantic love story of two shop assistants, Seymour and Audrey, who work in the store with this murderous, carnivorous plant.

The production featured different students in the main roles each night, drawn mainly from the junior school for the Thursday performance and the senior school for the Friday one.

On the Thursday, Briony Conaghan ( S2) and Shauna Healy ( S2) brought the relationship between Seymour and Audrey to life.

Halle Taylor ( S2), Emily Hunter (S6), Bethany McGurl ( S3), Sarah Smith ( S3) and Lauren Caskie (S4) all also gave excellent performances in other main roles.

The effort of these young performers was evident, with outstanding singing a notable feature of their performance.

This professional approach was matched by Joseph Casey (S6), Zoe Dinning (S4), Ciara Higgins (S6) and James Melville (S6) for the Friday performance, with each actor delivering an impressive performance in the main roles.

The detailed props created by the art department, superb make- up and simple- yeteffective costumes all combined to give a stunning visual feast which was complemented by the thrilling music organised and performed by the music department.

Siobhan McGar ty, St Margaret’s head teacher, praised the effort, saying: “The school show was a great success, with our staff and young people giving a wonderful performance.

Many parents attended the show providing great support to our budding stars.”
