Tips to be aware of dangers this summer

- Marjorie Kerr

A new campaign has been launched to help families stay safe over the school break.

Summer Safe West Lothian 2017, has been launched by West Lothian Council and West Lothian Community Safety Partnership.

And pupils from Bankton Primary School in Livingston joined executive councillor for services for the community, George Paul, and representatives from Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to unveil this year’s campaign. The campaign highlights various ways that parents and carers can help to avoid accidents by talking about various issues with their children and teens and raising awareness of possible dangers.

During June, primary schools spoke to pupils about staying safe during the summer holidays and each child will receive a summer safe sticker.

It is hoped that this will prompt parents and carers to talk to their child about what they have been learning.

Executive councillor for services for the community George Paul said: “The aim of the Summer Safe campaign is to ensure that everyone has a safe fun summer and that whether activities are planned or not, someone takes a few minutes to make sure that everyone is safe.

“The Summer Safe West Lothian campaign raises awareness of a wide- range of issues which affect children, pets and adults. With the sun shining children and young people can easily forget their road sense. It is worth going over the basics now with frequent reminders during the summer.”
