MORTON 0 LIVINGSTON 1:

Hopkin’s men tighten up at back to see off Ton

- Callum Carson

Livingston broke their Championship duck as Danny Mullen’s goal on the hour was enough to give them all three points in Greenock.

The Lions had failed to produce the goods from favourable positions in all three previous league clashes this term but a sturdy defensive display ensured they got off the mark with a second victory over Morton in as many weeks, having previously dumped them out of the Irn-Bru Cup.

Head coach David Hopkin admitted it was a vital three points for his side, and was full of praise for the way his defence bounced back from a disappointing display against St Mirren the previous week.

He said: “I think last week we really let ourselves down. It’s just not like us to give away three goals, so we were working on that aspect all week and I’m delighted it paid off against a very good Morton side.

“It perhaps wasn’t the prettiest performance from us, but it was important that we got our first win of the season. It’s a massive three points.”

He added: “The team work extremely hard and everyone puts in a great shift. The back three were magnificent and didn’t let me down at all.”

The boss made four changes to the starting line-up from the 3-1 home loss to the Buddies with defender Alan Lithgow and midfielder Keaghan Jacobs returning from injury, while James Penrice was handed his Livi debut on the left flank with Nikolay Todorov brought in to partner Mullen up
