Cauther eventually undone by Gowfers

- Callum Carson

West Calder United were unable to pull off an East of Scotland Cup giant-killing as they fell to a 3-0 home defeat against Carnoustie Panmure.

The Hermand Park men have had a terrific start to their South Division campaign and entered the first-round clash full of confidence, boasting a perfect league record.

And Gary Sibbald’s men gave a brilliant account of themselves with sturdy defensive play which left the frustrated Gowfers still searching to break the deadlock after the break.

However, the gulf in class would eventually show with a dominant display in the second half as Carnoustie made it five consecutive wins as they netted three times, as well as missing a penalty.

The Superleague men were presented with a great opportunity to get themselves in front when they were awarded a penalty in the early stages of the second half, but Robbie Urquhart blasted well over the bar.

They didn’t have to wait too long before getting their noses in front, though, as Steven Cook thundered home from 25 yards before further goals from Marc Walker and Jake Mair, in stoppage-time, knocked the Cauther out of the cup.

Elsewhere, Armadale Thistle fell just shy of causing a massive upset as they were edged out 1-0 at home to Superleague side Forfar West End.

The Jags were the better team for large spells of the game but couldn’t get the better of West End keeper Graeme Hart with Calum Christie netting the goal.

Liam Gray came close to forcing extra-time when he hit the post in the final stages.

Broxburn Athletic were dumped out by South Division side Oakley United on penalties after the teams drew 3-3 during 90 minutes while Whitburn had more success from the spot as they progressed 5-4 on penalties after drawing 2-2 at home to Premier League side Thornton Hibs.

Fauldhouse United’s perfect season remains in tact thanks to a 4-0 thumping of Easthouses Lily MW at Park View while Pumpherston and Blackburn United also scored four apiece.

Pumphy defeated Edinburgh Unied 4-1 at home, with Blackburn progressing after a 4-2 triumph away at Scone Thistle. Harthill Royal won 2-1 away at Blairgowrie while Livingston United lost 4-2 at home to Craigroyston.

Bathgate Thistle suffered a 4-1 loss at Penicuik Athletic and Stoneyburn were dumped out after a 4-0 loss away at Luncarty.
