Away draw for Whitburn

-

Whitburn earned themselves a valuable away point against Tayport but it could have been all three after they were two goals up at half-time.

The Burnie, under caretaker boss Euan Graham, took an early lead as Andy Thomson pounced on a through ball and slotted it beyond the keeper.

The remainder of the first half was evenly contested before the visitors were able to double their advantage just before the break.

John Paul Greig made no mistake as he fired home a corner from a tight angle to put his side in a great position to pick up their first league victory in eight games.

It wasn’t to be, though, as the Port netted twice in the second half after a tactical change to playing three up front paid off.

The Burnie were able to hold out for the first 20 minutes before Jamie Mackie reduced the deficit with a fine finish midway through the half before Dale Reid grabbed the equaliser with 15 minutes left on the clock.

With the momentum now shifted, the away side did well to hold on for a point and they were able to breath a sigh of relief as Gary Sutherland hit the crossbar with a header.

A contentious ending to the game saw a coming together of several players after Gary Brass attempted to play a quick free-kick which resulted in both the Burnie captain and his team-mate Lewis Milton being shown a red card.

The whistle blew shortly after, meaning the hosts were unable to capitalise on their advantage.

Whitburn are back at home this weekend as they welcome promotion hopefuls Haddington Athletic.
