Monarchs keep Friday night races

-

The Edinburgh Monarchs will be part of a revamped league for the 2018 season as the Championship is set to expand to 11 teams.

National League outfit Lakeside Hammers, based in Purfleet, will make the move to the second tier for the next campaign.

The Monarchs will also benefit from a higher team points limit after the alterations were made following the British Speedway Promoters Association’s AGM.

The team limit has been moved up from 40.00 to 42.50 with no restrictions placed on teams, in contrast to previous seasons where the number seven had to be a British National League-eligible rider.

It was also announced after the AGM that the top two tiers will race on set days for the 2018 season.

The Premiership will race on Monday and Wednesday, with the Championship running between Thursday and Sunday, meaning the usual Armadale Stadium race time of Friday evening is likely to be retained by the Monarchs.

The club have also been drawn in the northern section of the League Cup alongside Berwick Bandits, Glasgow Tigers and the Workington Comets.

The draw for the first round of the KO Cup was also made, with the Monarchs battling their Glasgow rivals. The prize for the winner is a tie against Berwick.

The league format will consist of teams facing each other once at home and once away with the top four making the play-offs.

The club do not currently have a rider signed for the 2018 season, which starts in March.
