Miller comes to the rescue for Broxburn

- Callum Carson

Broxburn Athletic grabbed a late equaliser in Brian McNaughton’s first game as manager.

McNaughton, who will be assisted by Steven Hislop, had been caretaker following the resignation of Max Christie last month and he was handed the role on a permanent basis the day before the Burn made the short trip to Bo’ness for a Superleague fixture.

And the visitors were able to come from behind twice as they extended their unbeaten league run to nine games with a makeshift side due to a length injury list.

The visitors had the better of the early stages but were unable to get the better of ex-Fauldhouse keeper Andy Murphy.

So it was against the run of play that the home side took the lead but it was though Athletic shooting themselves in the foot.

Andrew Gillen attempted to head a cross back to Shaun Donoghue in the Athletic goal but with the keeper out of position, the ball trickled over the line despite Donoghue’s best efforts to get back in time.

That wouldn’t put Athletic off their game, though, and they would dominate the remainder of the first half.

The visitors had a penalty shout turned down as Murphy cleared out a Broxburn player before they were able to drag themselves back on level terms before the break.

Kieran Anderson produced the goods against his former side with a stunning free-kick beyond the helpless Murphy for his eighth league goal of the season.

He was inches away from making it nine with a free-kick from a similar area that curled just wide.

The half-time interval came at the worst possible time for the visitors with it appearing only a matter of time before they got their noses in front.

The break allowed United to regroup and they came out the better side after the interval, enjoying their first real spell of dominance that led to them taking the lead for a second time.

Fraser Keast fired narrowly over against his former side before making no mistake when he got on the end of a tantalising cross from Marty Wright.

McNaughton’s managerial debut wasn’t to end in disappointment, though, and the away side showed the resiliency that has been evident in their fourth-month unbeaten league run.

They camped themselves in the Bo’ness half in the final stages and got their just rewards as Zander Miller raced through on goal in injury-time before calmly slotting the ball beyond Murphy to earn his side a point.
