Inspirational girl raises cancer cash

Hill climb is special tribute

- Sean O’Neil

An inspirational six-year-old girl will climb Arthur’s Seat to help raise money for cancer after her great-grandfather died following a battle with the disease.

Sadie Ferguson, from Blackburn, has already raised over £1000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and will take on the climb in Edinburgh on March 3.

Sadie decided to start raising money for cancer last November after hearing how it made people sick but has become even more determined to raise money after her great-grandfather Martin Neary died from the disease a short time later.

Sadie, who attends Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, said: “I’m going to climb up Arthur’s Seat and I’m got to raise money and I’ve already raised over £1000

“I’m doing it because I’ve heard that cancer has made people really sick and people can die from cancer and I wanted to do it even more since my granda Martin died from cancer.”

After Sadie decided that she wanted to raise money for cancer support, the young girl and her mum, Christine, looked at different ways that money could be raised.

Sadie said:“I wanted to climb Arthur’s Seat because I didn’t want to jump out an aeroplane or sit in a bath of beans.

“I wanted to climb the hill because I hate heights and I hate beans. I just wanted to climb up Arthur’s Seat with my mum and dad.

“My little brother Seth might not want to do it so my granny can baby-sit.”

Christine Ferguson, Sadie’s mum, said that the little girl came up with the idea of fundraising from out of the blue one day.

Christine said: “She was sitting in the back of the car and said she wanted to do something for people that have cancer - so I started looking at different things that she could do.

“In the time we set it up she found out that her great-grandfather had cancer and she was even more determined to do it. She’s a sensitive wee soul but she still wanted to do it.

“My gran was really, really proud that she was doing it.”

Sadie, her parents and supporters will climb the Edinburgh landmark on March 3 and are hoping to raise as much money as possible before that date.
