A West Lothian primary school has joined forces with a grocery shop to take part in a healthy living day to promote healthy eating among children.

Seafield Primary and the local One Stop Shop held the healthy living day on Tuesday (February 20).

The event saw pupils come to the shop and learn about healthier food choices and get involved in fun activities. The day is organised by the Scottish Grocers Federation through their government-funded Healthy Living Programme.

Kathryn Neil, field manager for the SGF Healthy Living Programme, said:“We go to areas and speak to retailers to get them to try and offer healthier options.

“We join up with the retailers and ask them to team up with a local primary schools, in this case it was Seafield Primary School.”

During the healthy living day each class comes to the shop and perform a treasure hunt where the shop has highlighted the healthier food in the store and the children find the highlighted options, learning to pick out the healthier food.

Ms Neil added:“It’s good for the kids and the retailers because the children get out of the school and into the shop and then they can come back with their parents and look for the highlighted options and say to their parents that these are the healthy options. We find that it works.”
