Ryder Cup star is up for hero award

-

Linlithgow golfer Stephen Gallacher has been nominated for a prestigious award in recognition of his community work.

The Ryder Cup star is shortlisted for the NRS Scottish Sports Awards Unsung Hero of the Year award.

Nordoff Robbins Scotland is the nation’s largest music therapy charity and is dedicated to using the power of music to change lives.

The 44-year-old Gallacher is nominated for his foundation’s work which supports and develops young golfers in the Lothian and Borders area.

Gallacher is best known for paving his own path in Scottish golf’s history, alongside his uncle, the former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher.

With a career spanning over 20 years after turning professional post-Walker Cup win in 1995, Stephen has experienced all the highs and lows of professional sportsmanship, and has made the admirable decision to give back to Scotland’s golfing community, via the Stephen Gallacher Foundation.

The foundation provides the opportunity for junior golfers in the Lothian and Borders areas to properly develop and possibly set a future champion on the path to success.

The Stephen Gallacher Foundation’s goals range from providing equipment to golf clubs, running competitions at club level, financial support for youngsters and specialist training programmes.

The other nominees for the Unsung Hero of the Year award are Adrienne Hunter, one of Scotland’s leading coach developers, former Dundee footballer John McGlashan and Geoff Brown, who was the longest-serving chairman in Scottish football prior to his recent retirement from his post at St Johnstone.

The awards ceremony takes place on March 23 at Prestonfield House in Edinburgh.
